What is the best way to clean and polish a hardwood varnished floor?

What materials or brands should I use. Is there anything I definately shouldn't use?

any specialty hardwood floor cleaner works well, i use swiffer wetjet hardwood floor cleaner, don't use water or harsh chemicals like bleach
put down nonslip throw rugs at high-wear areas, such as in front of furniture and in front of your access door. The rugs will help capture the dirt before it ruins the finish.because dirt on shoes acts like sandpaper on floor finish
