Hi susan,
Your fish has a fungus infection on his mouth. You can get medication for that at the pet shop that will clear it right up. He probably cut his mouth biting at gravel or decorations in the tank, this happens sometimes and isn't a problem as long as you medicate him soon. Best of luck!

This sounds like an illness, which one is hard to say. Most likely it's a mouth fungus or mouth rot. You can buy medication at any fish/pet supply store to clear this right up. But, if left untreated, it could spread to the other fish in the tank and make way for new diseases and infections. Even if it is just a cut or a sore from something that happened to your fish, you still need to medicate it so that it doesn't evolve into something much worse. Good luck with him and I hope this helps!

Columanris, cottony mouth fungus. Heat the tank to 83 and add an air stone. Put in 1 teaspoon of non-iodized rock salt per gallon tonight. Tomorrow put in 1 teaspoon per gallon in the morning and repeat again in the evening. Leave them like that for 2 weeks. Bring temp back down to 77 no more than 2 degrees per day. Change the water till salt is gone when your done. You may have to start this process with a large 50 to 70 % water change. Columnaris shows up when the water is not clean enough. Please do at least 25% water change and clean the gravel once a week for a goldfish tank. I change 50% once a week. They can die of this.
