Above The Line (ATL) is when you develop advertisements that will be placed in media such as TV, Press, Outdoor etc.

Below The Line (BTL) is where you organise promotions and other events that are designed to induce purchase by the offer of benefits such as lucky draws, free goods etc.

ATL has to promote brand and product benefits that consumers will value in respect of the product or service itself.

BTL promotes more immediately tangible direct benefits which do not rely on the inherent benefits of the product/brand in order to be preferred.

ATL supports a long term brand strategy.

BTL induces more short term sales.
