Day in and day out, we have notices of several viruses making their way to our PCs. Immediately thereafter, ads and offers from anti virus tool-manufacturing companies pour in to buy their products, to get rid of the virus. As a lay man, I wonder whether at all, any person who initiates or programs a virus ever found and tried and punished? I would like to know whether there is any international law exists which takes note of this cyber crime and alert interpol to take steps to arrest the man responsible?

The "viruses" that you get are actually spyware, and while a lot of spyware is harmless, it is very annoying and can, if enough of it builds up, cause the computer to run slower. There is no way to trace "bots" like this. The major developers of viruses that cause severe damage to computer networks, are usually teenage European hackers, and they are caught and punished.

It is still up to the individual computer owner to protect himself, and his property against the incursions of others. That's true of homeowners who have alarm systems. It's easy to sit around and whine about "catching" the criminal. Why is your computer not protected with everything you can get on it? That's your fault if it isn't. The best anti-spyware and antivirus today are free, so there's no excuse for not having it and using it to protect your computer.

It's very hard to trace a virus creator, but it has been done before to a few people and they have went to jail. There are so many viruses coming out every day that it is extremely hard to keep up with preventing and removing them, let alone trying to find the person who created it.

Yes some do get caught, and virus are traced, however it's not easy since it spreads so rapid and via email and internet, some have thought that virus tool manufactures actually produce the virus so people would purchash their product. there is some task forces that do look at this however it's under buget and under paid

in my opinion most of the new viri are written and distributed by the makers of antivirus software as a way to get you to buy their product. it was the third party anti virus makers who were mad when mocrosoft would'nt let them have the source codes for windows vista so they could make their products compatable. also you need access to the source codes to write viri seems to me that there is a connection there micro soft claims that vista is more secure if you use it's built in antivirus software and firewalls.
personally i'm learning linux so i don't have to give bill gates anymore of my hard earned dollars.viri don't kill linux op/sys like they do windows sys.
