There are free events but you have to pick your times well. Summer is generally the best time because of course it is cold and rainy here during the winter.

Fruitstock, the brick lane festival, the Regent Street festival all come to mind.

But the rest of the time......

The slide installation at Tate Modern is great fun - go early and get free timed tickets for later in the day.

Go to evensong at St. Paul's - free to get in and some wonderful music, every day at 5pm.

Sundy morning flower market at Spitalfields - need to get up very early.

The street entertainers at covent garden.

In the summer the Opera House erects big screens and you can see performances for free on selected dates.

In november you have two opportunities to see free firework displays - the mayor's firewaroks on the river and various free displays across London's parks.

And in the summer the south bank generally has a whole series of stuff happening - generally on the theatre terrace. Oh and in the entrance hall the festival hall often has free concerts but not sure if these are happening during the refurbishments.

And you can always go to recordings of BBC programmes - radio and TV - see their websites for details.

Phew!
