Martha Stewart was convicted of obstructing justice and lying to investigators about a stock trade, not insider trading. She was never accused in a court of law of actually committing insider trading.

A very sucessful, wealthy, talented, popular woman and getting more powerful by the day. To me, this was an "in your face" take away her power by those that fear "women in power". They wanted to make an example of this woman's very infinitesimal mistake. How perfectly absurd this whole thing was,,,while the real scoundrel's continued their corruption and the taking's of millions of our dollars, we were being entertained with Martha stewart's ..
"woops, someone told her about a happening that could effect her trade"..now what would you do??? Sit on it and watch it vanish???I don't think so. I know I wouldn't. So why did she go to jail???That's a GOOD question!! Our justice system is very corrupt. They can put who they want, for what ever reason they want, into jail..this becomes more obvious every day.

In a nut shell, she went to jail because her stock broker told her that the stock she had invested in was about to go bust therefore she sold the stock before it went down the tubes.
Well you say, "how is that illegal and worthy of jail time."?
It is cinsidered insider trading which IS illegal. She knew the stocks were worthless before the other investors. So where she did not lose any money, the other investors could have lost thousands or even millions.

March 7 issue - Just after 5 on a recent frigid winter morning, Debbie Gettings lined up outside a Detroit TV studio for a chance to work for her idol: Martha Stewart. The 34-year-old suburban homemaker was not deterred by the fact that Stewart, at that moment, was sleeping in a prison cell in West Virginia. To the contrary, Gettings is inspired by Stewart's steely determination to do her time for lying to the Feds in the ImClone stock scandal and then get back to business. She doesn't know, or really even care, if Stewart actually broke the law. She just admires Martha, the original desperate housewife, for not flinching in the face of adversity. Gettings would love to be that tough. And that's what got her out of bed early to be at the head of a line stretched around the block to audition for next season's hottest new reality show on NBC: "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart." "I hope to prove myself to be just as bitchy as Martha," she says, teeth chattering in the freezing cold. "She's my role model."

Newsweek magazine apparently agrees. Its main story this week is about Stewart, who is described as "thinner, wealthier and ready for prime time". Stewart - one of America's few female billionaires - has not been hanging out at a health retreat. She has spent the past five months in jail - at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia - for lying to investigators about a suspicious share trade.

Because her damn decorations are so damn ugly!!! Just kidding, it is illegal to know what is going to happen on the stock market and people make millions "knowing" stuff they shouldn't. Martha "knew" stuff was going to happen before it happened, made some illegal millions and went to a POSH jail. It was NOT uncomfortable or a jail in any sense of the word. Her company did well waiting for her return and now she is back... no shame in her crowd... she made an illegal killing and went and slept in a comfortable, nice place for a little while. No biggie.

For being stupid....the FBI couldn't get her for insider trading (getting advice of a stock about to fall so you can sell yours before it does) so they got her for lying to the FBI. That is why I said she went to jail for being stupid.
If the authorities ever tell you you are being investigated for anything of a criminal nature and want to ask you questions ,just say "I want to exercise my right to remain silent "and make them prove whatever they think you did in a court of law of law.
ALWAYS have an attorney present when the authorities want to talk to you Never try to lie or bull **** your way out of trouble.

She told a lie while under oath. Clinton lied to the American people and he didn't go to jail. Bush lies all the time and he doesn't go to jail. The congressman from Louisiana lied about not taking a bribe of $90,000 (in his refrig) and he didn't go to jail. In fact, he was reelected.
