What is legal will vary from state to state, so you'll have to check with local pet shops that will deal with them.
I'd recommend doing a LOT of research before choosing to keep a monkey as a pet. They are very cute when they are young and in their clingy phase, but when they mature, they will not want a lot of physical contact and can become surly and destructive. Many develop the habit of flinging things, including poop, around the house.
We had several monkeys at a zoo I used to work at who used to be pets, but their owners decided that couldn't deal with them anymore once they matured.

There are alot of different monkeys that you can have in the US but the US will not let anyone transfer monkeys from any countries because of the rate of disease... And good luck on finding a vet to administer vaccinations because they are hard to find.. Monkeys carry many diseases and can become very aggressive and bite their owners. They even have a particular disease that is fatal to humans, if you are not capable of taking care of a monkey and have never owned one I would NOT advise getting a monkey, just visit the zoo or try to get a job at the zoo so that you can see what they are like. Monkeys are cute but they are so unpredictable! Keep in mind that there are alot of scam artists in different countries that say they are giving away a monkey for free and all you would have to do is pay for the shipping.. its a scam, the U.S. wont even let the monkey come into the states so therefor the scam artists keep the money and there isnt anyway of getting your money back! So please be careful in your decision!!

Some kinds of monkeys people sometimes have as pets are capuchins, tamarins, squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, and marmosets. I wouldn't count on being able to get one in your area, though. Lots of places have exotic pet bans. It's not kind to keep a monkey, which is meant to be a wild animal, confined in a home. It won't be happy unless it really has a natural environment where it can play with other monkeys, climb trees, and forage for food.

It's also hard to find a captive bred animal when looking for any kind of exotic pet, like a monkey. And since it's cruel and illegal to buy an animal that was taken from the wild, you'll have to do a very fastidious search. And make sure you know about all of your local laws, since it wouldn't be all that fun to have the monkey confiscated from you because you didn't pay attention to local laws.

My suggestion is to find some other pet. Monkeys would be rare, very expensive pets to have, and very difficult to keep happy, since they're meant to be wild. Consider getting a dog, cat, rabbit, parrot, or some other pet instead, one that has already been domesticated for hundreds of years. They're also cheaper, easier to care for, and don't have bans against them.

Great hat!Good taste.

As for the monkey thing, I wouldn't go there. Monkey's, parrots and other long living creatures like these really have it rough! People love them but few people love them long enough...it's really sad. They are not easy pets, and I love pets!

If you can find one, go and spend some time volunteering at an exotic animal refuge or shelter. At least visit one. Talk to the staff at one of these places before you take this any farther.

I visited one of these refuges in Toronto, Canada. It was an amazing experience, I will never forget it! So go! No monkeying around on this one! LOL!

Have fun and good luck.

Why in the world would you want a monkey? Monkeys are very smart animals and get very bored and depressed if not cared for in the right way. They are used to living in groups, and when they are not surrounded by others can become destructive and mean. I also bet you didn't know that monkeys are VERY VERY strong! A very small monkey can be much stronger then you think! They're diet habits are also not as easy as one would think - at least to keep them healthy. Why take such a wonderful creature and "cage" it in any means less then superior? If you can not - and you can't - care for them properly, please reconsider. Try a cute hamster or guinea pig. Please think of the animals needs and wants and not your own.

Check the local lisence requirements for keeping exotic pets (which is the category a monkey is in) and this information will provide you with what is permissible in your area.

I'm not sure if you can get it in the USA, but if I were you, then I would get a black Spider Monkey. They are cute and furry. I love them. : )
