Ah gud. All the laptops are similar in such a way. This depends on your requirement as in what type of softwares that you're gonna use and all think about the future. It's better to get a laptop which can be easily upgradable. Talking about upgrades, buy where you get maximum customer support and look into the warranty also. Brands - they vary in prices with the same config. Brand Acer is the cheapest as far as i know.
If you have much multimedia content. stuffs like movies, mp3s, etc, get a machine with 120 gb. Its more than enough. If your a going to play games then have a machine with a dedicated graphics card with 128mb atleast. Some machines share RAM. Have a note on this. I recommend a machine [For latest req.] 1.66GHz+ CPU (better Core Duo 2 or similar AMD), 1GB Ram, VGA [depends on your req as i noted above], HD - 120GB and DVD writer to backup data if necessary. Hope this helps.
Cheers!!!

all depends how much you want to spend; i'd go toshiba or dell, def not HP. most of them these days will get you thru college no problem. as long as you can access the internet, write papers, and make powerpoint presentations, i don't see what else you need (for class that is); everything else is extra just for fun.
i would also say it depends on what you intend to study; if you intend to use a lot of artistic programs, like paint programs and such, you might want to get a mac laptop instead.
