My dad was a "divorce" lawyer lot of work, low charges......

My father in law was a tax-lawyer and CPA.....busy season
OK the rest of the year low business volume

today, with the housing boom maybe a real estate lawyer...

There are two basic divisions of attorneys -- civil and criminal. Each one of those can be broken down in several sub-divisions . On the civil side you have personal injury (both plaintiff and defense), corporate, tax and so on. On the criminal side, you have prosecution and defense, and public defenders. On the criminal side, prosecutors and public defenders are governement paid so the stipend is minimal. High profile criminal defense attorneys make the most often charging 10k and up just to retain them and then they charge by the hour -- often in 15 minute cycles.

I am a plainitff personal injury attorney where I only collect if I win -- usually 33%. However, these cases are quite expensive. $3,000+ for a doctor deposition plus 5-20K for other experts. There is always a chance you lose the case and then I would lose that money. Those who work on the defense side are paid by the hour by insurance companies with bonuses depending on performance.

I am sure others can speak to the corporate salaries but the pay is usually good. Don't forget though, many of us are in a tremendous amount of debt b/c of law school, college loans.
