does anybody have any good ideas of what state my characters shoul live in? i was thinking somewhere in the northern part of the country, or in the northeast, whatever, i just can't of a state that could have a big city where rich and not so rich people can live somewhat close to eachother. help please?

New York is a great option, but it's used a lot. Maryland is another great alternative.

How about Albuquerque, New Mexico? It has alot of the qualities you seem to want except its on the opposite side of the country.
