After what you've just typed, there's nothing I can add to it. We are too hard and we NEED to be CONTENT!!! This does not mean that you should not set goals and work towards them.

Great question

Because we have historically changed ourselves over time. Cultures aren't static. Structural anthropology fails. We keep re-inventing ourselves, so why would we content ourselves with the newest version? Isn't that a defeatist posture?-- to some extent it's important to identify those features that have become assumedly static "human nature," but only for purposes beyond this stultification. On the basis of our curent assumptions we will make many errors and seek solutions to these errors in indefensible theories, because we forget each time there is a revolution, that what is the case, was decided not so long ago.

I guess its very hard to be contented with what we have before us. We only learn to appreciate what we have only when what we have is being threatened to disappear or when we finally do lose them.

And I think its hard to accept ourselves to be what we are, because most people do not accept us for who we are. Certain people are in some ways, whether in big or small ways, ostracised and its hard to accept ourselves if no one accepts us. Of course, many say we have to believe in ourselves first before anyone believe in us, but the fact is, it isn't easy. Its easier said than done.

Also, sometimes, I believe we shouldn't always just accept that "we are what we are". For if everyone thought in that way, there would not longer be any change for the better, everyone would be just remain stagnant. And that isn't always good, especially if improving ourselves is not such a bad thing. i.e. if a jerk accepts himself for who he is, then he would think being a jerk is something he is entitled to be.

But from apart from that, some people are too hard on themselves so much so they become obsessed with such improvements, it becomes unnecessary and they become unhappy with themselves and others, then in such a case, people should learn to be contented. Especially so if you start going through all means, whether bad or good to become stronger or better.

So, no its not always good to accept ourselves for who we are. Certain changes are good. Its only bad when it becomes extreme.

'Karmanye' vadhi' karste, ma' faleshu kadachan' ..." , always remember this as informed to all humans by Lord Krishna. This is eternal thruth. Therefore one should always remain and wish to be in the 'Working" mode.

If you keep an Aim before you, then you naturally try to achieve it if you are sincere,
and this sense of efforts making may be looked by others as "Hard work" on themselves.

Therefore whether you accept it or not, we are always what we are, . What is stored for tomorrow, you do not know, so working is not bad.

Sitting idle is otherwise also not desirable because an 'Idle mind is devils house."

If you are content to accept what you are at any given point in your life, you will never know what you could be. Rest assured, this will leave you wondering "What if I.......etc.?" To my way of thinking, this is not a comfortable feeling, especially when you reach a point at which you believe your life might have been more fulfilling/content/happy if only you had pushed yourself to learn what your actual capacities were. I doubt if anyone can remain content with him/herself when the level of success in work-love-achievement is less than hoped-for because instead of motivating him/herself to find the upper limit, the person was satisfied to settle in at a lower level and "be done" with it.

No, Human beings are not hard to themselves. Infact, they want to be more better than what they are and the people around them. For they want to be the best in the world.

Because people that do wrong in the world lower everybody's expectations of humanity. The more honest with yourself about who you are, the clearer you will perceive reality. If you know yourself to be good you have no reason to be hard on yourself.
