"given a laptop by a friend who needs repair"
Hmmm.. he/she should see a doctor then. Or did a friend give you a laptop that needs repair?
"am i aloud"
Are you screaming? Then youre prbobly "aloud". LOL
Warranty (not warantee) relates to a product, not a person, so yes you can repair the laptop under warranty if it's still under the warranty period.

You only have two days. She should call or you can using her name and have her old address handy. You moved......Either way someone needs to call right away!
Either way you will have to send it in which will take forever and then there is no guarantee that the issue is covered. It's worth a shot if you got it for free though.
If you miss the time window take it to Best Buy and get the $50 diagnostic. They will tell you exactly what the problem is and how much to fix it.

you also need the receipt of the laptop and the ID of the person in which the warantee card is registered.

If the manufacturer allowed her to change the name and address to yours, then they have agreed to honor the warranty for you. Call them right away and get it done. (Have seen too many cases where Dell -- I mean the manufacturer who shall remain unknow -- has delayed the call until the warranty runs out and then refused to honor it.

If she has transferred the warranty to you, and most warranties are transferable, then better use the warranty fast. Call the company!
