early bowling in the US, coca rubber mat, inventions?

I was told that early bowling in the US, they used a mat instead of a wooden floor for bowling? ... Anyways, does anyone know about early bowling in the US and inventions?

As far as i know bowling was on wooden lanes in the early days...and has progressed into synthetic lanes, if you live near St. Louis, you can go visit the Bowling Hal of Fame, near Busch Staduim. Bowling lanes back then was made of many kinds of wood from oak to maple to whatever they could use ..but Maple is/was prefred because it was more durable and could take a good beating
