My son's school makes me crazy sometimes .There is a new set of rules every week. We can't drop them off just on the sidewalk in front of the school.( thats in the parking lot) except for a 15 ft area right in front of the main entrance. That means I have to pass the building his classroom is in and wait for all these people who don't trust their kid to walk 10 ft into the building.( They have to sit there holding up traffic and watch the kid go in the door even though there are teachers standing there to do that job.)
But they are allow to ride their bikes or walk from home.
Then they are micromanaging recess they aren't allowed to play football, not even catch! then they outlawed kickball, and tore down a cool obstical course the kids loved.

Most of those rules have no purpose other than to teach discipline.

Oh wait. After actually reading your entire question, I think that those rules are created to pacify those few that have a problem with insignificant issues.

The rules may seem stupid, but it's to keep the unreasonable parents (probably the ones who sit and wait til their kid gets in the door) from suing the school. In that 15 ft area the teachers can safely patrol the area and if you do drop your kid off any place else you are liable if they get run over.
If a kid gets hit in the face with a ball and breaks his nose or falls off the obstacle course and breaks an arm there are plenty of parents who are more than happy to sue the school for negligence. It's a reflection of the parents, not the school.

I'm a newer teacher at a newly formed charter school, and let me tell you, if I hadn't seen the incident happen i wouldn't believe it. It is incredible how we can have parents who are very involved in their student's life and then parents who are completely ignorant of anything going on. We have a rule that students are only allowed to be dropped off unattended 5 minutes before school starts. However we have parents that drop the student off an leave in the frigid cold 45 minutes prior to the bell. Now, we have a before and after school program the student may be signed up for, but they refuse to sign them up and pay for the program.

Having expierience working in family clubs and such, where the tendency is to lay on the stupid rules, I can tell you, it is because something really ridiculous has happened in the first place. If Americans weren't sue happy these days, there wouldn't be so many insane rules.

I teach elem school.
Some rules are silly, but you know what? Someone complained or someone got hurt or someone can't follow good rules so teachers/administration must "micro-manage" and create silly rules to keep everyone safe. My guess is that some kid probably walked too close to a moving car in your car drop off line and so now.......they have a specific unloading zone to prevent that. You probably have a good kid who follows rules and you are a normal parent who follows rules but the idiot in the car behind you is on the phone and not even aware their kid is not done climbing out of the backseat yet and she/he starts to drive off. OR after his/her kid is out of the car, he/she speeds off and almost hits a kid walking to close to the edge of the sidewalk along the building because they are not the least bit concerned about your kid. So now you must unload in the specific 15ft area.
As far as recess...........while I believe strongly that all students need that recess time, I've seen first hand too many times where a student got hurt and it ruins it for all students when one parent complains. "The teacher wasn't watching my son and he got hit with the kickball on the arm and was embarassed and got a bruise!" I've heard it all. Our kids can't play chase because of the hands to self rule. Plus, some kids "tag" too hard or pull on someone's shirt and a parent hit the roof when they found out. I have done "indoor recess" for years to avoid the outside play problems. Sad huh?

One ruins it for the many. Think of it this way: At least you know your child is safe with all the micro-managing teachers. AT least you know they're watching your kid.

I stay in Va, whilst my babies attain highschool i might desire to wish that no longer in basic terms will they learn the educational skills mandatory to graduate i assume in addition they're going to learn the way the real international works. i'm no longer too happy with reference to the the heavy handed rules some college structures use to limit expression, thats no longer how the real international is. yet whilst confronted with increasing threats to scholars and school protection there is little room to pass. in spite of the undeniable fact that, some college structures make issues a ways worse yet no longer useing undemanding experience in judgement. So what does that say with reference to the hopes of mum and dad whos babies are caught at school gadget run by fools?

Unfortunately, every silly rule started with some incident or complaint. There are a small minority of people who can't manage themselves, so the system has to manage them..
