Because they want to create a demand for it. A demand will drive the price up. If there were alot of them sitting around, you wouldn't be so willing to pay top dollar. PLUS they did have to recall some because the hand controllers were not working properly. In Canada[ at least in NS] we have no problem getting them. Zellers has lots of them. Then again around here VERY few people can spend that much on a game system.
Good old supply and demand at work. They knew how many would want them, but keeping them back will and does keep the price up.Hope this helped!

The Nintendo Wii is going to sell fast for a while, just like any other video game system. The best thing to do is to wait until sales start to slow down a bit, and then invest in the Wii.

The previous answer is right, idiots who think Nintendo or any company would keep demand high to drive up the price have something wrong with them. The price isn't going up. If a Wii is selling online for 300$ on ebay, Nintendo doesn't get that money, a private party does.
Also, nobody had any recall of anything. The news likes to make up headlines. Some people were literally throwing their controllers and the wrist straps eventually broke. This was the customer's fault. Nintendo didn't recall anything, but they made new, thicker straps and offered to send them out to anyone who wanted them, for free.
I have the old strap, I have no problem with it and no interest in getting a new one.

Right now, the Wii is selling over 3 times as many systems as the PS3 and its so popular, they are disappearing off the shelves as soon as they are in stock. I also wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is keeping the supply to a trickle just to keep the demand at an all time high.

Because Nintendo isn't shipping a huge amount to stores. It's Nintendo's way to keep the Wii in high demand. It's doing what the 360 did last year. Ship a few to the store to make it seem like it's more popular than it really is.

Ugh. The responses people are giving are ridiculous. Nintendo isn't keeping the supply low to increase demand. That's pure idiocy. If they kept the supply low, people would eventually get frustrated and give up/buy something else. The REAL reason they are selling out so damn quickly is simple. PEOPLE ACTUALLY WANT THEM. Supply is quite healthy, the demand is just out of the supply window. Nintendo is supplying just as many Wiis as was promised. A number considerably higher than the PS3 or 360. The fact is, keeping supply low only decreases demand. People get frustrated or irritated and just buy something else or nothing. Once everyone who wants a Wii gets one demand will decline. But that's to be expected.

The people who are suggesting that Nintendo is holding back on their supplies are either misinformed or trying to misinform you. The simple truth is that it is a new product at an affordable price with high demand, and they can only make so many at a time. I can assure you that Nintendo is making and selling as many Wii's as possible.

In the next month or so you'll see the supply start to catch up, and it will be much easier to find one. Best of luck!

It took me forever to find a Wii too. It is just a fun, great gaming system, and is very popular. The price makes it worth it. Also, I firmly believe that if Zelda, Twilight Princess didn't come on for the Wii, it wouldn't have sold as many, which was very smart on Nintendos part. Just keep checking your stores early and you will catch em, I did. Good Luck!

Nintendo is high in demand. I am sure you will be paying 249.99 for a Wii instead of 599.99 for a Playstation 3
You will just have to keep calling around businesses to check if there is any Wiis in stocl
