unless your sensors output rs232 the above suggestion won't work.
you are on the right path with the parallel port, Basically you can send an active high or low state to one of the pins on the parallel port and loop or use a timer until the state changes then start and stop your clock.
Here is a good place to help with the code part

there is conflicting critiques on the undertaking of Shabbat elevator utilization, maximum critiques state that its utilization is accepted purely in specific circumstances, because of the fact it sounds like a loophole, and it disrespects the fee of Shabbat, interior the comparable way because of the fact the halacha forbids the wearing of things in a public section on Shabbat for extra then an 8 ft stretch, however the pupils of the talmud forbid wearing something for 8 ft, dropping it, lifting it returned and wearing it for the subsequent 8 ft, in spite of the reality that that's in accordance to the halacha, yet you're disgracing the Shabbat by potential of loophpoling around. those with the opinion that that's allowed for each individual to apply a Shabbat elevator, have faith that god provided a sequence of regulations, and left some area for human beings to be waiting to have fun with Jewish existence, and it fairly is not seen a loophole, because of the fact interior the tip of the day, no obstruction of Jewish regulation is being performed, and there is not any could function to the regulation.

On your toolbox, add the component COM

This gives you easy access to your com(serial) ports for listening to a sensor like you describe.
