To answer your question, NO, someone cannot just plant a virus on your computer randomly. That would involve someone bypassing your ISP's Firewall, bypassing the Firewall built into your modem (if you're on DSL), and then bypassing your software firewall if you've got one. That's too complex for someone to do JUST to plant a virus on a personal computer. If you were NASA or a major bank, I would say yes it may happen, but in your situation there's no one on earth who would waste THAT much time just to plant a simple virus. You have to open a file that has a virus planted, open an email with a virus, or go to a website with an Active X control that contains a virus. Smaller things that can be planted which sometimes act like viruses are Spyware, Malware, and Adware, which can be obtained by simply visiting a website. Get anti-spyware and anti-virus.

Best free anti-virus: http://free.grisoft.com - Also has a link to free anti-spyware
Best free anti-spyware: http://safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy.

Highly recommended.

Put a lockdown on your computer in the event someone else may be using it for some of the reasons other people have already listed (porn, unsafe downloads, etc.) Password protect it.

Even with great sites like this one, there are many, many sites on the Internet that seem to be safe, but in fact are virus-ridden. Before joining groups, signing up for Facebook, Yahoo Answers, or anything else like that (I chose two reputable choices to illustrate the point) - read the site's security policies. If none are listed, proceed with due caution, or not at all.

yes. there are many ways on how your computer is infected with a virus. When you put a CD, or Floopy Disk that contain or infected with a virus to your computer and you dont have an anti virus(updated is better) you have a big chance of infecting your computer.

You can also get a virus through internet browsing or downloading. Some site have their virus/trojan downloaded to your computer instantly without you knowing.

Having a good antivirus, anti spyware and firewall is your defese.

While it is possible for a Virus to be intentionally planted on a computer, it is more likely the result of the initial infection. Most Viruses do not come alone. They come in bunches. they also make sure that if you don't get them all out then what happens is that the ones you don't get go back out on the internet adn download the ones you got rid of again.

it really is conceivable that you spread the virus to all pcs on your community. maximum lately and widely coated, the conflicker virus became in a position to attempt this, besides as spread by flash drives. i imagine the IP address conflict is a reliable indicator that the virus is messing, and transfering by your community. i'd advise putting apart all the pcs on your community and preforming equipment restores*. After this, i'd advise installation AVG anti-virus to avert destiny issues. * If the themes persist, reinstall residing house windows ( absolutely ubuntu will be acceptable) at the same time as preserving the pcs isolated, then reconnect and at modern-day receive an anti-virus application.
