Does anyone actually believe that composting doesn't require any nitrogen if done properly? None of the books I've read on it suggested that. They all call for solid or liquid nitrogen sources. I've been getting all the coffee grounds I can find. I just have a huge amount of leaves and I need more grounds or something better.

Coffee grounds are FULL of nitrogen... empty the grounds from the coffee machine and sprinkle away!

Over the layer of plant material, sprinkle ammonium nitrate or a complete, high nitrogen fertilizer such as a lawn food. About ½ cup of fertilizer for each 25 square feet of surface area should be adequate. An equal amount of ground limestone or wood ash can be added if pine-straw or woody material is composted. Normally we omit lime to produce a slightly acidic compost that is higher in nitrogen. If fresh livestock or poultry manure is available, a 1- to 2-inch layer may be substituted for the commercial fertilizer. No extra nitrogen is required when composting materials from lush, succulent growth or grass clippings.

Untreated lawn clippings are a good source of nitrogen. When composing think air, water, green, and brown.

Brown = fall leaves and wood chips
Green = untreated grass clippings and non-invasive garden weeds (no seed heads or runner roots)
Air = turn the pile
Water = off and on if you live in a dry area water your compost bin

regular compost makes its own nitrogen if it is composting correctly
Additional nitrogen source such as fresh grass clippings or
a high nitrogen fertilizer such as cottonseed meal or ammonium sulfate will help speed decomposition
sometimes city parks dept will part with grass clippings or local golf course, the fertilizers are found at any local garden center wal-mart lowes home depot ect

you can buy fertilizer at garden centers and at Lowe's, Depot, Wal-mart. Select a fertilizer that the first number is the highest (for example 23-3-7). The first number is nitrogen in fertilizer. Be sure that you get JUST fertilizer and not a weed killer or pre-emergent in it.
