This is not a good scenario if you want another interview. However, if ill or an emergency arose, write a very brief email citing the reason and in a case like this, it is better to telephone as well. You never know when someone will get to all of their e-mail, just like voice mail. When calling, get to a live operator and insist on leaving a message to be delivered if at all possible. If you do not want another interview again with this company, the e-mail and phone call/voice mail will be okay. Remember, they have planned for your visit today so the sooner the better. Things come up and they should understand but that is not a guarantee.

Dear Sir or Madame,
Thank you for granting me an interview for your open position. Unfortunately, I don't have the sense to call you to cancel the interview, so I have chosen to send you an email. I would of course be pissed if you sent me an email to cancel this interview.. but I digress.
You see, yesterday I had a terrible case of explosive diarrhea. It was so bad in fact that one blast shattered the bathroom mirror. Later when racing to the commode, I stepped on a piece of glass, cut my foot and had to go to the emergency room. While the nurse was stitching my foot, yet another blast sent me into the emergency room wall.
At this point, I have a concussion and nurse still hasn't removed the needle from her eye.

Just call them and let them know that you are canceling. Employers get that prospective employees might take another job or are not interested etc.
If you are set on emailing them then...thank them for the offer of an interview but that you will have to cancel. If you want to tell them why then you can..accepted another job etc....

Keep it short and simple. Just say that you apologize for having to cancel your interview, giving an honest reason. Then genuinely thank them for giving you the opportunity in the first place. It's not like it's going to affect them in anyway. Any business is busy and they appreciate quick notices like that. Their world doesn't revolve around you so letting them know helps them to adjust those 20 min accordingly. They're read it and just move on.

Please call. Don't burn bridges unnecessarily. A call is far more respectful than an email that might not be read for a day or two.
