In order to secure the nomination of the Republican party nomination one must kiss the rings of the GOP prophets: Jerry Fawell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson and others. The religious right has control over the GOP and no will get nomination unless they approve. This main reason I left the GOP when they began to-cater to religious right.

Unfortunately, if he is to win the Republican nomination, he really has to. The far right represents a significant number of voters in the primaries...and delegates at the convention.

Both parties struggle with a "lunatic fringe" that must be assuaged for a candidate to win the nomination.

Unfortunately, in having to do so, they alienate a great many main stream voters and run the risk of losing in the general election.

OK, how about this situation: McCain knows he needs the Falwell crowd to get the nomination and probably needs it to get into the White House. Once in, he dumps this line of baloney and becomes a leader we all can be proud of - thoughtful, inclusive, decisive.

Hey, I can dream can't I?
