This problem is stated poorly. According to the question the answer should be 6,000 * 2 because the winner got half the prize money and that was equal to $6,000. Since it says there was only one other winner awarded money and he got 1/4 of the winner's money then it's obviously not going to be double the winner's earnings.

All we have to do for this problem is find 1/4 of 6,000 and then add that to 6,000 to get our total amount of money awarded to our winner and runner-up. To find 1/4 of 6,000 you just turn 1/4 into a percentage. 1/4 = 25% Then change the percentage into a decimal. 25% = 0.25 Then multiply 6,000 by 0.25 for how much the runner-up received. Then add the winner and runner-up's prize money to find your answer.

If the winner receives $6000 then the 2nd place person received $1500 for 1/4 of 6000=1500 and the total prize money would equal $12000 because that is 1/2 of the prize money.

If the winner receives $6000, and $6000 is half of the total prize money, then you have the equation:

6000 = (1/2)*total

To get rid of the (1/2) multiply both sides of the equation by 2

2*6000 = (1/2)*2*total

Simplifying, we ahve:

12000 = total

So, there you have it, the total amount of prize money is $12000.

if 1/2th of prize money is $6000,
then total amount is $12000
also as runner-up receives 1/4th of the money
he gets $1500
so, total amount distributed=$1500+$6000
=$7500

The 1/4 doesn't matter. If 6000 is half the pool, the total is $12000.

$12,000

If the winner receives half, the total is twice the winner's share of $6000, or $12,000. ;)
