Norton used to be a great anti-virus product. Now-a-days it's just a nightmare. It takes up to many resources and doesn't have a top notch detection rate (does miss some virus and trojans).

The best anti-virus at the moment on protection/performance ratio seems to be Kaspersky. I suggest you try that.

If you really want a lightweight anti-virus then try NOD32, not as good as kaspersky but still has decent detection ratios.

AVG Free is a decent free solution, lightweight, decent detection rate but the free version lacks some blocking and treatment capabilities.

Hope I could be of assistance.
~Best of luck.

DO NOT UNINSTALL NORTON!

You will need to go Norton's website and download their uninstaller. Window's normal uninstall will not get it all and you are likely to have errors everytime you start up the computer after that. Not only that, but installing any Norton or Symantec product might then fail as well.

I personally use Zone Alarm as my firewall (free)
Windows Defender as my anti-spyware (free) and
AVG as my Anti-virus (free).

I would not let Norton anywhere near any of the computers I maintain for just the reasons you mention and also numerous system crashes and hang-up to do with Norton's "CcApp" that I've experienced.

The only thing I liked about Norton was it's anti-spam, but it slowed down even my really fast computer, so I deleted it from all the computers and just wasted the money I'd paid for it.

I have read the latest version is MUCH better and not such a resource hog, nor does it crash computers so much - But I cannot confirm that as I've never used it,

Good luck with whatever you decide is best for you!

I would suggest uninstall the program by using their removal tool to make sure that any trace of the program is actually gone, then install some other anti-virus software. I use PCguard supplied by virgin media which includes Anti Virus, Fire Wall, Anti Spyware, Identity Theft Protection, Parental Control, Popup Blocker.
This software is update every three hours so that you stay protected at all times while you are using the Internet. other people here use AVG but then I don't think that avg has all the other features mentioned like PCguard has, so it is up to you which anti virus program you use. I do know that I once had Norton Internet security 2007 on my computer and caused some problems so I uninstalled my copy then installed PCguard. if you are interested then the web address is,

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

From my experience Norton Internet security is a terrible virus protection program. It slows down the resources of your computer drastically and takes forever to boot.

I recently purchased BitDefender 10, and I'm finding this to worked brilliantly for me. It does not slow down my computer that much at all, and I find that it is very good.

Hope this answer helps!

Norton Antivirus and Internet Security 2007 (as well as McAfee 2007) are very resource demanding softwares. It's not a surprise that your boot-up times has increased very much.

Also these softwares are not so effective either.

Use Kaspersky or Zone Alarm. They do a great job and are not system resource hungry either.
