Defense all the way!(presuming you can score at least 90 points a game collectively). Just look at what the Pistons did to the Lakers in 2004, Lakers averaged about 98 points a game that year and Detroit only 90 points (87 in the playoffs). But without Big Ben and with Webber, they don't have a chance like they did that year!!!

though the suns are a very good offensive team and are being successful, i think that it all comes down to defense... a strong defense opens up an offense, after all, by getting good steals, rebounds, and just shutting off the other team, it is easier to get in fast breaks, and of course, not allow so many points... that is why the Pistons are dominating the east

good defense leads to good offense.
turnovers = fast break points.
Good defense also means more shot attempts which gets back to my point you'll put up more shots making a teams a better offensive team.
Anyhow you can't have good offense if your outscored by your opponent, and to outscore your opponent you must limit their shots with good defense and increase your shots taken. Some people make the argument rebounding is defensive, but really rebounding is both offensive and defensive, it just depends on what end you are grabbing it.

Defense doesn't win championships alone. Simple as that. Name one all defensive team that can't put it down offensively? Exactly, cause there isn't any. Good D is fine, but no one can stop an amazing offence, which Dallas and Phoenix have proven.

I think, the phrase "Defense wins Championships"is as old as Bell-Bottom pants.Lets face it defense is at an all-time low just look at the scores at halftime of a game. It is better to stock your team with more scorers than defensive people.Fans want to see scoring not fake matador defense.

Defense-All the recent NBA Champs have had a dominant big man
Shaq, Duncan, Wallace...etc
If Kobe wins championships, why does he do so poorly without Shaq?

NBA playoff basketball is know for stepped up defensive pressure(not increassed ppg or fg%). DAL lost last year because they couldn't defend Wade (along with rediculous foul calls).
Detroit is up 4 games with 2 months to go... last I checked thats not dominating. If you want dominating, check Dal and Phx in the west. They got a whole lot better with Webber and D is not his thing at all.
Best in the east, hell yeah. Dominating... probably not.

DEFENSE!
I think Defense is what creates the main Tempo of the game. You can score buckets, but if you don't have what it takes to stop the other team from doing the same then what good is being able to do it?
