Some smokers are perfectly likable people, so this doesn't apply to all of them, but I see butts all over the ground on sidewalk and other areas when there are garbage cans nearby.

Do they not consider cigarette butts to be litter? Thanks.

It is a form of littering, yes. I would never throw a butt in the garbage can though, I'm afraid I'd set the contents alight!

I try and refrain from throwing them on the ground but, there are times when I do toss them away.....

Sorry :-(

Why do some? Based on the amount of cigarette butts on a city street in New York it seems like all. Not only do they throw them in the street they don't put them out putting cancerous toxins into the air (THANKS!). Anyone who litters is inconsiderate but I think smokers find that flicking their cigarette away to be a part of the experience. In my opinion there is a love smokers have with the whole process (besides the addictive nicotine) that attracts them to smoke - the lighter, the way they hold the cigarette, how they blow the smoke out, how they take the cigarette out of the pack and yes flicking it at the end. At least us non smokers can take solice in the fact they paid through the nose to smoke the cigarette.

FROM THE WORDS OF A SMOKER

Yes it is littering ..I smoke , I do not smoke in my house because of the children , I do not allow any smoking in my cars , I have an umbrella outside way in the back , I will stand under it even in the cold and rain ..I do not throw them down , I knock the fire off and will put the filter in the trash sometimes the paper will fall to the ground but that part will deteriorate next rain fall , the filters is what stays around ..when there is no trash can around , I have a tin container in my pocket , I knock off the fire ,then put the butts in it ,and throw them away when I get home in the outside can not inside , I also have a smoke away spray that I spray on me before I return inside it has no smell and eliminates the smoke odor...there is a such thing as smoking responsibly just as drinking responsibly .. I smoke , but you can not tell it .. my doctor freaked out on my last physical when all the results came back he said" you don't smoke do you" ..I told him I have been smoking for 20 years ...he said he could not tell it , said he never seen someone with such strong lungs ,and over all great physical shape ..

Smokers are like drinkers you have the ones with common sense ,and respect for themselves as well as others .and consideration for others ..then you have them....the trash who thinks it is ok to throw them out of the car window or throw then on the ground in front of stores .and some really stupid ones who think it is ok to smoke in a car with kids because they have the window cracked open a little bit .. or smoke in their home with kids .. I am a smoker , I understand the risks believed to be caused by smoking , I accept those risks .. and yes I voted for the smoking ban in public places because even I hate the smell in a building , and the trash left behind those who were never taught to clean up behind themselves
***for the above ..As far as paying out the nose for smoking ..NO they are only 2.75 per pack here , and in New York everybody throws everything on the ground up there , the only reason things cost more in NY is because the cost of shipping cargo over the toll roads( which the state govt. gets) ,and the permits required to bring a tractor trailer in the city . ( money for the state govt.) and the high sales tax ( which the state govt. gets ) and don't tell me the tolls fix the roads because those are some of the worst roads in the country along with California

Smokers throw cigarette butts on the ground for the same reason drinkers throw their beer cans, soft drink cans and McDonald's cups on the ground. And eaters throw their sandwich wrappers on the ground. And parents throw dirty diapers out car windows. And men spit their tobacco chew on the sidewalk. And kids spit their gum on the playground. LACK OF CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS.

I don`t know, i am not a smoker ( Thank God ) ,but I don`t think they can keep it in their hand too long, because they`re hot, and maybe there aren`t trash cans around..

if you don't care about your own health and cleanliness, it's easier to not care about litter and public cleanliness (or even about others' health - second-hand smoke).
