nycguy is wrong. Elizabeth was born 7 September 1533, the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn. Anne miscarried a son five months into her pregnancy in 1536, by which time Henry had fallen in love with another woman and wanted to get rid of Anne. Anne was falsely accused of adultery with five men, one of whom was her brother. She was also accused of witchcraft. She was beheaded on Tower Green on 19 May 1536, and the next day Henry married Jane Seymour.

In all, three of Henry's wives gave him children. Katherine of Aragon was the mother of Mary. Anne was Elizabeth's mother, and Jane Seymour had the long-awaited son, Edward. After Henry's death in January 1547, Edward became King at the age of 9, but he died of tuberculosis when he was 16. He had no children and after a short quarrel over the throne, his older sister Mary became queen. Her short reign was characterised by religious repression and torture of non-Catholics, and she died, possibly of cancer, in her early forties, on 17 November 1588 (that's the date mentioned by Nycguy, the date on which Elizabeth's reign began). Elizabeth's accession to the throne came as a huge relief to most of the country. She reigned for 45 years, and 17 November was kept as a national holiday throughout her reign. She was probably the greatest monarch this country has ever had or is ever likely to have! She died in March 1603, having kept to her word that she would rule alone and would live and die single.

Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was Queen of England, Queen of France (in name only), and Queen of Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. She is sometimes referred to as The Virgin Queen (as she never married)

The daughter of Henry VIII and his Queen Consort Anne Boleyn, the sister of Mary I of England (who was also a queen of Spain) and Edward VII of England. She was born in 1533 and spent 5 years, from age 15-20, under house arrest. She ruled Britain from 1553 until her death. She was a Protestant although considered tolerant of Catholics. She was a fiercely devout Christian, regularly speaking of the supremacy of God and Jesus as the source of all she was. She never married, although she had many suitors; most believe she put her country's interests before her own. She was given the nickname "The Virgin Queen", although she probably wasn't a virgin. The name "Virginia" is a nod to QE1 - the American colony was named for her. Her reign was a time of much exploration and expansion. Her other nickname was therefore "Gloriana" ("glorious one") because of her "glorious and victorious reign".

She was said to be extremely intelligent, well-educated and have a very sharp wit. She was obviously tough, usually merciful but sometimes merciless (executed her cousin, Mary Queen of Scots, as well as her lover). She was a keen horsewoman and hunter, enjoyed spectator sports as well as outdoor pursuits. She was fluent in several languages, notably Latin and French, and was a decent poet and quite an accomplished musician. She was good at board games like chess, and reputed to be a good gambler, often placing bets with her courtiers, and always paying up when she lost.

She was said not to be terribly physically attractive.

She was the youngest daughter of Henry VIII. She was known as the Virgin Queen because she never married, however that fact can now be disputed. She was a strong woman, despite stating that she was weak. When she died in 1603, without children, James VI of Scotland became James I of England. He was the monarch that Shakespeare wrote Macbeth for.
