I am writing my first novel that actually made it past the first chapter. I am very excited and was wondering how to go about copyrighting before I try to get it published. I have a friend who is a notary, is that sufficient or do I have to copyright and how do I go about that? Also any tips on finding an agent would be helpful.

Visit copyright.gov and pay the $45 dollars. Or, seek a publisher and they will register it for you without you paying anything. According to copyright law, mailing a copy to yourself won't protect your from infringement. If someone steals your idea or parts from your book, you can't go after them in court. Read the copyright.gov website thoroughly.

You do not need an agent for a copyright. Just go to the website for the US Copyright office and download the PDF document application for "Dramatic Literary Work" , fill out the form, pay the fee, along with a copy of your work and you will receive the copyright within 3 to 6 months.

You can make a copy of it and post it to yourself via registered mail. Write the date and sign it saying copyrighted
