I don't want to hurt his feelings, and maybe I should keep an open mind. I asked him to go somewhere where we BOTH agree on, but he said he is inviting me to go. Hmmm, not sure what to do? The bar setting just doesn't thrill me

Oh, I really don't think going this time would really 'cause any harm. He is trying to make an effort and you are trying to stop any type of communication. Just go have some fun and meet new people.
Next time, you invite him to where you would like to go , and if he does not go well then we know who is not and you have a valid excuse for all future bar scenes, Who knows you two may wind up being great friends.

It is always nice to make a concession to do something you ordinarily wouldn't to foster good relations. But, if you are really opposed to going to a bar and can't even have a soda and hang for an hour, politely decline for this time and then invite him to something you KNOW you would both enjoy. Maybe get tickets to a sporting event for a team you both like.

Go anyway, have a drink with him out of respect. Then, suggest going elsewhere. Hey it is still early enough to get tickets to some sort of event, try and do that. I wish I had a brother in law to hang out with.
