Cate's character was shot with the rifle which the Japanese man had owned but gave to his hunting guide as a "thank you" gift. When the police came to to talk to the girl she thought it was about the death of her mother which she is extremely distraught over. She and her father had grown apart since the mother's death. The police officer got the girl to open up which enabled her to re-connect with her father. The whole story is about how this one gun incident affected many people.

The Japanese connection is vital. The man ownede a rifle, Remington 700 I think, and gave it to his guide as a gift. The rifle helped in sonme manner for the man and his deaf mute daughter to get over her mother's death. Miyuki my lover is Japanese and is prettier and has a better body than the girl in the movie Rinko Kikuchi.
