Agree with Mystic - you need to discuss this with your caregiver AHEAD of time. My OB did this w/o my consent with my first! It's YOUR body and YOUR choice. Make it known to your caregiver ahead of time that you DO NOT want this done. They aren't supposed to do anything to you without your informed consent.

Ok here's the deal, you absolutely have the right to INFORMED CONSENT OR REFUSAL of any medical treatment. Also please note the word INFORMED which many doctors seem to forget.
However many doctors (particularly OBs) don't even ask before they strip your membranes they just tell you after/as they do it.
You need to honestly assess what kind of doctor you have, one that respects both you and NATURAL birth/a women's body. Or if you have one that is kind of in the middle, or one that believes everything has to be managed. If you have one of the first two sit down and have a good chat. If you have the last PLEASE for your safety and that of your baby find a new doctor or midwife!
And congrats, and be proud that you know what is best for your baby which is to come in his/her own time. Not to be managed.

Good heavens. Yes, tell her no. You're quite right to question it. It _is_ best to wait until she comes on her own.
This:
http://hencigoer.com/betterbirth/
is a worthwhile book for anybody who doesn't want their labour managed by somebody who thinks all women should conform to statistical norms. (Such as the above-mentioned "labour not progressing," as though it might suddenly and permanently stop. Just because it doesn't match an average doesn't mean you should go ahead with interventions if baby and mother are doing fine.) The articles on the site about induction are worth a read, too.

Sometimes there is no choice but to have it done, if you are in labor and it is not progressing, this maybe the first option to get labor to move on, I would ask the dr to wait until it gets to the point that it has to be done if nature doesn't do its job.

Of course you can tell your Dr. no! You can always elect not to have a procedure preformed. It's better to let everything progress naturally unless there is a problem.

No you don't HAVE to have your membranes stripped. I think that is used for woman who want their babies out early and are very uncomfortable in their pregnancy and want to hurry things along.

Yes - please wait until your baby is ready! and go to http://www.yourchildrennaturally.com - for great natural info on holistic prenatal care, natural childbirth and healthy children-
if you do just one thing naturally it should be to NOT let them cut the cord until it stops pulsating - that gets all the cord blood in to your baby where it belongs. There are huge health benefits to this alone!!!
Read about it at http://www.yourchildennaturally.com under cord blood banking articles
