It just kills me that we cater to the ignorance of people that probably shouldn't be here to begin with. Granted, it's a country BUILT on immigrants. But if they're here in the country they need to know the language.. and know it well.

Actually earning potential isn't the issue when the folks that can't speak English aren't exactly ROLLING in the dough...
And.. as free as we are, we're free as AMERICANS. Not as illegal immigrants or people that are forever 'working on their citizenship and can't speak the language in the meantime'.

OMG, I was pissed for the same reasons yesterday, trying to get info on my credit card.
If you can't speak English, don't even pick up the phone.
How about the directions for things, food, putting something together, every language in the world listed, and where the *ell is English? In a tiny spot on the bottom, or last page upside down.
Maybe we should write to our congressman in our own made up language and see how they feel, oops I forget they don't read things for themselves any more.....grrrrr
I have lived in Germany, and they have had Americans stationed there for years, we didn't exactly have it easy there,as in the language, reading directions, we had to take German in school to a t least pick up enough of the language to get around, you didn't learn you were up a creek without a paddle...
Our country has been overly generous to other countries but our own......

the first people to settle in what is today the US, were NOT English speakers. But as an American, I will definitely agree that to live here you should learn to speak the language. Although if you go to other continents like Europe where they have infinitely older cultures and civilizations, you will find a myriad of languages spoken... in fact most people in europe unlike here in 'merica are polyglots meaning they speak more than one language. but Europeans still have their fair bit of squabbling over dumb shizzz just like everyone else.

America is an open society and yes, I do agree that people who immigrate here SHOULD do as the Romans do but with our societal structure the way it is, it's easier to help those who don't speak English.
As long as America is liberal in its thinking we'll make concessions -- up to a point.

That is aggravating. Have you noticed when you buy something new you have to dig through the whole instruction book just to find English writing. It's even on food now to.

because THIS IS AMERICA...where we welcome all to enjoy life as they see fit.....while it would certainly be easier for all of us if they would learn the language it is not a necessity...and companies realized that they were missing a great deal of earning potential by not catering to those that do not know the English language..THAT is why you must press one to hear options in english

Because people who ask these kind of questions have too much time in their hands, so pressing number 1 is not a big deal.
