People don't want to think the oil companies run things. All these advancements, yet we use more gas.

Gas got cheap, buyers weren't interested in mileage. SUVs and cars with more power were what sold, so the carmakers invested in making cars with ever-increasing horsepower rather than increased gas mileage. Now that gas is expensive, they are reaping the rewards of those decisions.

It's not really the oil companies, it was the car manufacturers responding to what sold. I personally wondered all along why someone needs a car with 300 horsepower to go to the store, but who am I to question the wisdom of those great minds?

Money talks, and B.S. walks! Good question there. The public did go on a big vehicle kick there, but now that it's been taken advantage of, your best bet is something like a small Chevy or Saturn. Something that's reasonably priced yet gets good mileage and a lot of miles on the engine before it pukes.
