I think they say a lot about the candidate running the ad.
For example, in the senate elections last year, we had a 2 term incumbant whose first ads were attack ads against his opponent. It told me a lot that in 12 years in office, this guy couldn't come up with a positive thing he had done which would convince people to re-elect him once more.
So Rick Santorum was sent home.
But, unfortunately, negative ads usually work. So we will keep seeing them.

Attack ads are ingrained in the fabric of today's politics as much as we wish it wasn't. I can remember back to the fifties and even then attack ads were used. Today the attacks have become more fierce and are run by affiliated groups of the two parties. Witness "move on.com" and the "swift boat veterans" as just two of those groups. As long as they can claim victories there will be NO change in the political parties.

It has been a part of the American political landscape since America began. Jefferson was attacked as an atheist and as a lover of slaves in his day, Lincoln wrote anonymous inflamatory letters to his local newspaper about the opposition for years prior to becoming President and so on. Truth is, attack ads are successful, and we, not our stars, are to blame.

Yeah, they tell the whole story about the person placing the attack ads. That they are desperate losers who know they cant stand on their own, so they need to destroy the other candidate.
Unfortunately, Americans are retarded and buy into it

Anyone who doesn't denounce all attack ads you don't vote for period.
Those who want only attack ads against themselves pull doesn't get my vote.
When it starts really affecting their votes is the only time they are going to listen to the public.
