Matt Damon's character wakes up with amnesia and realizes that he is an assassin. He has failed in his last mission because his target's young child was in the room just as he was about to make the kill. This, when he realizes it, causes him to question his life and future. And, yep, the government is trying to kill him, and he defends himself. What he really wants, though, is to be left alone to live a "normal" life.
