Socialized medicine has a lot to do with the Canadian physician dilemma, which is why many come to the United States. In effect, funds allocated for medical care in Canada are capped so many physicians no longer practice because their salaries are not good. I say this because I recruit physicians and for the last 15 years or more, there continues to be an influx of physicians coming to the United States who become licensed here and enjoy the practice of medicine because it is not socialized. However, even here, many physicians ask themselves what it is worth because insurers do not pay for all they provide patients. A Canadian physician with great talent should explore opportunities in the US. It is no guarantee but it expands the job search and especially now as many US trained baby-boomer physicians are retiring.
