My DVD player on my laptop will only play the first 40-50 minutes of any DVD I try and play. Whether it's old or new. Has anyone had any similar problems.

It's nothing to do with the player, I've got about five and all encounter same issue.

Is there a solution?

Thanks guys, it's definitely not a trial thing, always used to play fine, PC is a couple of years old now, and only happened a couple of weeks ago.

Also don't think it's overheating. It simply won't play beyond the 40th or so minute of a DVD, even if I start the DVD say from 40 minutes in

If it is happening on all your DVDs and you are having the same result after trying different DVD playback software, it's your DVD Drive.
It's possible that there is an obstruction that is preventing the laser from moving forward any further. Try shooting some compressed air into it to clean out any dust or debris. If that doesn't work, you may need a new drive.

I agree with the 1st Replier, However, if that is NOT the case, it sounds like your drive is possibly overheating and quits working.

Once it quits playing a movie, can you put another DVD in and it plays it fine until another 40-50 minutes? *IF* it does, it sounds like the time limit thing, rather than overheating\hardware problem.
