I am returning a leased car, and the 2 rear tires are too worn down and need to be replaced. They are expensive tires, so i want to replace them with a cheaper type right before I drop off the car...is this acceptable?

Did you buy "wear care" when you leased it ? That it for leases. It will cover normal wear and tear on the exterior and or interior like, scratches, dents, dings, tires up to $2500.00

Check the terms of the lease. You probably are required to pay for ordinary wear items, and tires fall into that category. I don't know if it says anything about that level of detail, though.

Here's a thought on a compromise. If you have a full-size spare that's the same brand, buy one good tire that matches the spare, put both good tires on the car, and buy a cheap brand for the spare.

In most cases, yes.
The vehicle needs to be as close to manufacturer spec as possible.

I recommend checking with a local used tire store to see if they have something that will match the others.
