depends on why it is noisy. If you find it makes a howling, or whistling sound the air flow may be resticted. solution is to have a heatting expert take a look and see if adding a few more heat runs or cold air returns will help. Sometimes the aif flow can be restricted and the furnace has to work to hard to blow the air through ducts. But if your furnace is an old one you may only improve sound by replacing it. Really is hard to say without being there...call a reputable furnace company and have them take a look.

is the furnace in a room by itself? if it isn't you could frame around it insulate and sheet with gyoproc and a solid core door, keep in mind you need fresh air intake to this room.

Anouther thing you could try is clean it out real well and check the motor and squirl cage(fan) to see if there is any provisions for lubricating...Lets

If furnace is in basement then drywall the room its in and insulate behind it. If its upstairs or actually all the time make sure filter is clean(and buy the best brand you can afford) and that it gets good air return. Lots of times the furnace is not the source of noise but the metal will move and crack as it heats up in there and make a lot of noise-not much can be done about that except go along all of them and check they are put together properly and secured. Sometimes putting insulation around the heat ducts helps because there is less difference in temperature less crackling and such.

Two tips:
1) Scold the furnace and tell it to quiet down or you will punish it.
2) Turn the furnace off
