OK,I'm confused. I took one of those first response tests the other day. A negative result came up after the 2 minutes. Then after about 45 minutes a faint positive line came up. It said in the instructions not to read a NEGATIVE result after 10 minutes. The next day I bought the cheaper version of the test and the same thing happened with the first one, and the second came up negative. This one's instructions said disregard all results after ten minutes. Is it possible that a fake positive can come up after the 10 minutes has passed?

NO! it will turn positive in a lot of tests after so long( that's why it says to disregard after 10 minutes). i would not trust them!. wait at least a week or two before you test.

What you saw was an evaporation line, and not a positive reading. Evaporation lines happen as the urine and dye in the test stick dry out/evaporate. That's one of the reasons you shouldn't be reading the test after the 10 minutes has elapsed.

There's a reason for the instructions. And, when the instructions say not to read a negative result after 10 minutes, they mean you shouldn't do what you did: that is, looking, after the 10 minutes has already passed, at a test strip that had a negative result within the proper time frame (as yours did).

Hope that helps.

Well, I've got news for you!! Everything that everyone is saying about the after 5 or after 10 minutes has passed is false!! Thats a lie!!!! I am here to tell you the same exact thing happened to me! I took about 3 pregnancy test on my second pregnancy and the first one didnt show a line until like 5 minutes afterwards so I ignored it thought it was false because the line was so light. My mother in law works at a drug store so I went there and took a test I stayed in the bathroom for about 5 mintues and nothing came up so I threw it away! About 30 minutes later my mother in law called me and said "were having a baby" well the test showed a dark red line! She went and got it out of the trash LOL! Come to find out I was pregnant! So, yes the line can be very light and it can show up after 10 minutes!!!

What's an evaporation line? Evaporation ("evap") lines result with the test's antibody strip just looks slightly different than the space around it. There is a line of antibodies (usually made from mouse cells) in the Control and Test section. The Control line binds with any liquid and turns pink (or blue, in tests using blue dye.) The Test/Result line turns pink only if pregnancy hormone is detected. If not, the moisture passes over this strip and does not turn pink. It may, however, become more visible when the light hits the moisture on the strip-- it may appear gray, colorless, like a "dent" in the test, or like a "ghost line." It may appear at any time-- as soon as the urine hits it, after a few minutes as the test absorbs the moisture, or after the 10-minute time limit. It may appear when the test is drying, or after it has dried. It may disappear as the test is drying, or after the test has dried, or not disappear at all.

The simple fact is that there is always "something there" that is slightly visible-- it's simply the antibodies on the test that would turn pink in the presence of hCG. When the test becomes wet, or as it dries, or after it dries, the antibody strip may become more visible. Therefore, all tests may have them. It is not a defect; it's just how tests are made.

A real positive is identified by its color (pink or blue, whatever the color of the test's dye is) and its appearance within 10 minutes of urinating on the stick. A line that appears after 10 minutes, regardless of color, must be considered an evap line and is caused by the test's chemicals changing. HPT's are rapid assay diagnostics, which means any results appearing after the "rapid" time limit of 10 minutes are invalid.

Yes. As the test dries out it is possible to see a false positive.
That's why it says to disregard after 10 minutes. If you want a definite answer, get a blood test.

You are negative, and anything after 5 minutes is false. You are not pregnant even if it shows up positive after 10 minutes, after a negative was shown.

I called the 800 number and asked this same question and that's what they told me.

The pregnancy hormone in your body may be week still. The best time to take the test (regardless of what the box says) is your first morning urine. Wait at least one week after your missed period. Take another test. If you still get the same results you may want to see your doctor. You can still get a positve or negitve reading if your pregant or not. Some women have the pregnancy hormone present in their body when they ovulate.

Buy a new test. Test your FIRST Urination in the morning after you slept and the Levels of HCG(if any) are in the HIGHEST concentration.

So Review...best time to Test is First Pee in the morning.

Yes you can get False results if you wait longer then the alowed time.

If they are telling you to ignore any results after 10 minutes then ignore them, wait a few more days and retest.

The line that comes up after 10 minutes is an evaporation line, it doesn't mean anything except the stick is drying out.
