Heres acouple links to get you started. Not sure exactly what type of transparency your talking about. I know that if I want an image that has no background (lets say I have a picture of a frog, and I want to paste it on a picture of a lake) then I have to save the frog photo as a .psp file. If I save it as anything else, the background automatically fills in with white.

cheers!
