it dates back to when most family were farmers. They needed the children to help with the planting and harvesting. That is why we have the breaks when we do summer and winter.

This is how it happened
Farming was the largest industry in the country, so large in fact that farmers used their kids to help out, Summer was their best harvest time, and they often made many kids take the summer months off, after many years of having nearly every kid absent for the summer, the schools eventually stopped having school during the summer, to cut costs (such as paying teachers for teaching 2 or 3 students at a time). that's pretty much the story, don't know much about dates but that's why we have the summer of...cuz of child labor

It used to be that in the Summer months the heat was too hot for the classrooms because there was no AC. Also, Summer meant planting and harvesting crops and the kids were needed to help with that chore.

Originally, most families were farm families. The children were needed to help their parents with the farming. Since this was throughout the summer, schools generally let out during that time.
