i'm a lower level manager at the moment and the directors of the company are looking at relocating our services. this would mean that there would no longer be a position for me unless i was willing to step back down the ladder one rung which would mean a pay cut. there would be no further room for progression from the new position but i absolutely adore my job, would love the new position but i want to be able to better myself in the long run. what should i do?

You are torn. You enjoy the workplace but you possess ambition. You do have a third option. And it is the option I advocate. I'm an old guy. I've seen this little chess gambit before and usually a gambit done by a dying, decaying company.

I don't know what career you are in. As an advisor, I would urge you to seriously consider jumping ship to a competitor firm. You might me surprised about the offers. If you have to move to another location, move. And when you do start at the new firm, you won't regret it.

Immediately redo, hone your resume. Get it out there. And I mean now.

Many companies do this. They are poor companies to work for. They are simply restructuring to cover up the fact that they are an incompetent upper management and as a result of their incompetence the company is going into the tank.

The Directors of your company are plain and simply jerks. From what you have said this company won't last too much longer anyway. Their corporate behavior means that the company is going down the tubes.They don't recognize their best asset... you. Why are you working for them?

I do not advise you to quit though. It is harder to find another parallel job with another firm from the unemployment line. Unemployment benefits are worse than Other companies like to steal people rather than taking free agents. Its a quirk but it is a quirk of the workplace that you can use.

You have a good reason for leaving the firm. You simply say that you are leaving for a better opportunity in a new firm. That is the truth. You are leaving for all the right reasons.

In the interim. Take the demotion at the last minute but don't announce that decision until the very last moment. Drag it out as long as you can. You must eat too and be able to afford to send out the thousand resumes next month.

Take the step down for now, to pay the bills, meanwhile find another job in the same field, put your applications and resumes out to the competition. You don't really want to get stuck in a place where you can't progress forward do you? Best of luck to you!

take the job to pay the bills, but sounds like not a good long term situation at that company, so start looking now for another job. much easier to find something else while you are still employed. Don't wait to get laid off in another round, start looking now

I understand you may love you job; however, the objective in most cases is to seek advancement opportunities. I believe you should find a new position where you are able to grow personally and professionally. However, ultimately the choice is yours. You are the only person who can truly weigh the pros and cons and make a clear and conscience decision.
