Please dont talk about V8's and "dont you want a 8-cylinder" shut up on the matter of V8. All I want to know is how to improve perfomance on a Four-cylinder!!!!

Since you said the word performance then we can rule out fuel economy savings. Since that 2.2 was a wimpy engine it would be wise to rebuild it with better quality parts starting from the crank shaft up,. Bolting on horse power is always good such as flat top pistons, better heads or having heads reworked to bigger valves and bigger cam, providing you have a stick. Then headers and bigger fuel injector in the throttle body and finally the catback exhaust and cold air intake system,.

i would really try a cold air intake. i had a 96 S10 and i put a cold air intake and racing plugs and plug wires and it really improved in performance and gas mileage also. so i would try that first and see what i thought if i was you. hope it helps

That 2.2 is getting you decent mpg, I'd leave it alone.
