the atmosphere is divided into 5 layers.

1. The troposphere is the first layer above the surface
2. The stratosphere is where most aircrafts fly due to stability
3. The mesosphere is where Meteors or rock fragments burnup
4. The thermosphere is a layer with auroras. It is also where the space shuttle orbits.
5. The exosphere is the upper limit of our atmosphere.

The Earth's atmosphere consists, from the ground up, of the Troposphere (which includes the planetary boundary layer or peplosphere as lowest layer), Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Ionosphere (or Thermosphere), Exosphere and the Magnetosphere.

It seems to depend on who is doing the counting, and what is being counted.

Offically, there are four (a)...
