In the past I have let friends check their email, and I don't have to tell the rest, changes have been made to my computer by several "SO CALLED EXPERTS",who think they are doing you a favor by changing things without asking. I have swb dsl and it is so slow it's slower than slow people pc. I think I got rid of all the viruses but something is still very wrong. I need a computer guru who really knows what they are doing. At this point I can't decide who is qualified to help. my next step is to do a total system restore and start over. pls advise I'm ready to throw this computer in the swimming pool. (i have a friend who really did that!!!) P.S now no one can sign on to my computer even as guest. so sorry they must be punished

I need more info to find the real reason.
But first I suggest cleanning your PC regsitry. Most slow computer are caused by regsitry errors....
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the pc registry. You need to scan and clean your PC with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your PC and Internet performance dramatically. It even can speed up your PC by 300% or more!
There are some comparisons and reviews of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

There's clutter in your start up. Run a scan at antivirus.com and let it clean things up first. Honestly, in this day and age you need a computer person you can trust just like a mechanic for your car. Find yourself one by asking around. Word of mouth is the best testamonial for CPU Geeks. They can set you right again and setup a guest account with no admin rights. I also recommend Winpatrol. It asks you before allowing start up changes and monitors calls for memory by rogue programs giving you the user more control over your computer and it's resources.
Face it, the computer is here for a long time to come, it doesn't hurt to learn a little about to take control of a big part of your life.

This is the world you get when living inside the 'Microsoft Box"!

You can keep the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions" and run these other FREE programs, to combat and avoid them: 1.SpybotS&D, 2. CrapCleaner, 3.Adaware, 4. Shootthemessenger, 5. AVG, 6. Open Office, 7.Firefox, 8. Thunderbird, 9.Frostwire

OR, run one of the FREE 700+ *BSD and GNU/Linux, or other 'Nix systems that are a simple DownLoad, run upto 50X faster,
in a true concurrent multi-processing multi-tasking environment of upto 4,000 apps. games, programs, all running in 20 seperate desktops!

Start with livecdroms, like http://pclinuxos.com
though there are 310 at http://livecdlist.com for free. They usually include several thousand FREE games, programs, applications.

The world (165 national governments; the Fortune 1,000; at least 39 American States, most charities), enjoys FREE CHOICE, not "Microsoft's 'Trusted Partners'" choices!

Always run a firewall that is on seperate hardware, my preference being http://ipcop.org on any Pentium class machine of 350 to 900 Mhz, with 16 to 128Mb RAM. Runs headless. Real protection, spam dumping, website filtering.

Good day. Now i cant exactly explain your problem but i can give u some advice. I suggest u backup all yur important stuff on a cd or USB Stick/Pen drive. Download:

Spybot search & destroy for spyware.

AVG Antivirus for Antivirus protection

Windows Defender To prevent unwanted programs on yur computer

Zone Alarm Basic. Firewall protection

All these are free programs so download them and have it handy so when u do over yur computer u have it readymade to install. The advantage is that it does not use up system resources and when u do over yur computer, u will feel better that for certain there is no virus, spyware etc I Suggest u carry it to a computer technician to format the computer or better let them come by u so u no for certain u are dealing with a expert. Usually slow start indicates too many programs (genueine or spy) starting up on boot. I had a similar situation and this is what I did:

1. Downloaded Spybot and scanned my system throoughly - it did find a bunch of spywayr some nastee and some harmless and cleaned out my system.

2. Secondly I scanned my PC using a utility called Clean Up! and deleted a Gb+ worth of temp files and like. Freed up a lumpsome of hard dis space.

3. Finally run a Disk Defrag and tune up your hard disk to better performance.

Before you wipe out ur PC and start the laborious reinstall, suggest you do the above steps to see if it speeds up ur boot and your system overall.

Thanks

If yours is like most computers, it's probably infested with adware, spyware and malware.

Start off by uninstalling any software programs you don't need. (File downloaders, file sharing programs and gambling software are not a requirement!!!)

Clean out your temporary internet files, cookies and history.

Download some free adware/spyware removal programs and install them. Launch them and get all the updates.

Update your anti-virus software as well. Run a full system scan with your anti-virus software and the adware/spyware removal tools you've just installed. If any of the software complains that it is unable to remove a detected problem, boot into safe mode and run your scans again.

To boot into safe mode in Windows XP, restart the machine, hit the F8 key until you see a black screen with an option to "boot in safe mode".

Launch your anti virus software, run a full system scan, then run a full system scan with your newly installed adware/spyware removal software.

Download and clean out your registry with RegCleaner. Click Tools "Run all" to get it done quickly.

Once that's complete, so a "Disk clean-up" and defragment your hard disk(s).

With that done, head over to PC Pit-stop and tune up your internet connection.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

Run Spybot and Adaware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it every again.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php....

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

http://www.cablenut.com/

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

When was the last time you ran the maintenance on it? Disk clean-up, scan disk or check disk, and disk defragmentation?

Have you dumped you cookies, temporary internet files and cleared your history. Sometimes this can slow you down. then run your maintenance.

Edit: I also agree with the answer above mine.

I would check with the local shops and compare prices. I bought mine from Compucare, and they charge $60 to go through and check it out and correct things.
