To me, the horrible smell is worse in businesses that are NEXT to Subway restaurants. I actually haven't notice the smell in Subway restaurants themselves. So bad that I can't shop at my favorite record store because it's next to a Subway and reeks like vomit. My advice for Mark Christiano, Subway's "Global Baking Technologist" -- visit a few franchise neighbors. Take a whiff and ask the employees what the smell is -- you'll get an ear full. They know exactly where the stench is coming from. One business owner said the Subway next door agreed to vent differently so as to reduce stink in adjoining units. Unfortunately it hasn't helped.

The odor most likely comes from baking parmesan cheese. My friend calls my baguettes with parmesan baked on top 'throw-up bread' (not from Subway, from a local bakery). She claims to love the flavor but won't eat it because of the stink.

Bottom line is, don't ever lease space next to a Subway restaurant!!!

Yes it's certainly a very distinctive smell.Sometimes (when I feel very hungry )it is quite nice.
Our subway is on the ground floor of a shopping centre and the smell takes over the whole place.

I think it's the bread and other baked products. One has just opened on the front of the building that my husband's shop is in. Now the shop smells like that too.

Lol I know what you mean.
The SubWay in Aldershot stinks lol, I cant walk past it.
And thats rubbish about the yeast, because I make bread, and that doesnt make me feel sick, so its got to be all the different meats combining together.

No way, i like to layer the condiments interior the sandwhich. there's a particular order. Bread little bit of mayonnaise (vegetarian type) burger (additionally veggie) cheese mustard tomatoes pickles lettuce sprouts ketchup (might've positioned the place the mustard is, yet i like it next to the sprouts) sprouts avocado w/spike or salt mayo bread

Ha ha! And isn't it ALWAYS worse at the Walmart Subways? It's the bread rising/baking. I think it stinks too. I always get my subs to go!
