because men can't win all the time...

Men often take the woman in their life for granted once she is taken or leaves, then men will very much desire what they used to have taken for granted, for her absence causes pain and pointlessness in their lives. Then there are those do not have a woman in their lives and sees how beautiful and grand life can be with one and this increases their inherent desire for one, just because they don't have one.

Freedom and civil rights are the same. Once a country's citizens had civil liberties for some time, they begin to take it for granted. When the liberties are taken away, the pain of its absence makes the citizens how much they needed and miss these liberties and the desire for them comes around once more. Citizens of other countries who never had civil liberties often see how better life is with them, and realize life could be better through they never had liberty and seek her out in the lands she resides.

In short, it is always human nature to desire a woman and the desire for civil rights and liberty is just as strong, if not greater when not present, and the sight of knowing that you are about to get what you desire is very breath-taking, so I think the symbolism is very fitting

Hi spidee. Had not seen you in a while. I am always intrigued by your questions. I even looked this on up and could not decipher why liberty is a woman. I don't think women were even allowed to vote at this time in history so the best "guess" I could come up with would be that women were still those who were stereotypically the care takers in families therefore putting this huge iron woman out on an island with a torch to watch over her country and if and if any would be enemies approached they would be scared off by the large woman with the torch. If you find out a "real" explanation would you please cut, paste and email it to me. I find if fascinating and would like to know withouth having to search for hours in the library. LOL. Good to see you again spidee

I am not sure, but it is very possible that the gender of the word "freedom" in French to be feminine. In many Latin languages words have genders. In my language "freedom" is feminine.
