My state bar has a lawyer referral program and they will give you free or reduced cost attys based upon your financial situation, so call your state bar. There is an alternative, however. You can file bankruptcy without an atty. The bankruptcy petition forms are available from the bankruptcy court. They are long and somewhat intimidating because of their length and detail. Another alternative is to get the form petition and fill it out to the best of your ability and then consult an atty only for advice on the questions you cannot answer. You could also come back to this site and post a question about the petition and I'll try to answer. For example, you might need to know the difference between a secured debt and an unsecured debt. Your medical debts are unsecured and that's a good thing. You might wish to re-affirm (keep) some debts, like a mortgage or a car payment. I've taught bankruptcy and I'll help you with questions after you get a petition form and review it.

If you file for bankruptcy you will only have to pay a small portion of the lawyers fee up front and the rest will be folded into your plan payments. There really are no court costs, the Trustee gets their payments in the form of interest on your debt.

Most attorneys who conduct business on a pro bono basis either volunteer their work as court appointed attorneys or where they will recover their expenses in a case with certain monetary recovery.

You may wish to look towards the many companies that offer "Debt Restoration" which can be found over the internet or through your local telephone directory!

Legal Aid Societies work for low income people on a no cost basis - you must be able to pay your court costs.

They are in the phone book or check the state bar association for the number.
