My sister has been getting the shot for like 6 yrs now, and she always feels tired and if she has intercourse at all she bleeds. The main thing lately is after her shot she gets INSANE migrains and now severe constipation. I am worried about her! I work in a hospital and a patient , who is also on the shot came in for a bone scan and said that her physician told her this shot may cause bone loss, which made me wonder what else could go wrong. Perhaps it has nothing to do with the shot, i dont know!

I'm not sure about the symptoms of Depo because I've not personally used that type of birth control. The migraines and constipation can be associated with ANY birth control. She may not be cut out for that dosage of hormones. She may need to switch.
However, the bleeding with intercourse....If it were me, I'd see a doctor since that is a symptom of possible unterine/cervical cancer. It could be nothing, but better to be safe than sorry!

I was on Depo for over 6 years and actually loved having a shot every 3 months vs. taking a pill every day. I never experienced any immediate side effects after getting the shot, HOWEVER I had also heard that it can cause bone loss - irreparable bone loss, at that. So I had a bone scan a few months ago, and sure enough - despite eating healthy and regular exercise - I am showing a bone loss. I've stopped, and am now back on the pill. I'm not sure if her other symptoms have anything to do with the shot, but she should definitely be concerned about bone loss after the amount of time she's been on Depo.

Hey. I had one shot of depo May 2006 and let me tell you I would never recommend it to anyone. I never had a normal period since, I just bled (not heavy) straight for over a month then I would get 2 weeks break then it's back again! I finally had a real period in Nov 06 that lasted almost 2 weeks, then the second one in Feb 07 that lasted just the same. There were numerous times I thought I was pregnant but nothing. Hubby and I have been trying since Dec 06, it's just frustrating seeing negative hpt's. Depo provera should be OFF the market.

Personally, I haven't had any side effects from Depo. I had awful side effects from everything else. :)
But everyone is different, and it may not be right for her. (It's now known that all forms of birth control cause a small amount of bone loss, but it's only for as long as you're on it.) She should probably make an appointment with her doctor to get checked up. Six years is a long time to be on the same birth control, and it may be time to try something else for a little while.

every one i know has problems with it either they gain so much weight or they bleed all the time i would stop the shot the dr should have changed her to something else by now because you should only take 1 thing for so many years check and see what the time span is on depo , and look it up on line just type in birth control or depo and it should pull up several sights witth info. she needs to change her birth control

Yes, I was on it for four years.
She should get her bone density checked, as my doctor said you need to have it checked after five years of using it.
I had weight gain, horrible mood swings and I spotted at the most inopportune times. I am so glad I am off of it.
