I am referring to business and lounge suits, NOT formal wear, and young men, not the elderly; forty years ago every picture or film you saw of men going about their daily business featured them in hats (bowlers or trilbys for the gentleman, I believe, and flat caps for the working man).

Now if you walked down the street wearing a hat with your suit most people would either think you had something to hide or were extremely outdated- what do you think...do you think a hat looks odd these days?

PS: Note this is not my personal opinion, merely the result of a conversation I was privvy to.

Thanks!

Yes, you would look a little odd and from a different age. I think that wearing trilbies (as they were known) pretty much died out in the early nineteen fifties. It is ironic, that before that time, you would have looked odd without one.

Yes, it looks odd these days. It used to be that men always wore a hat out of doors. I seem to remember a Sherlock Holmes story which says the suspect had been seen 'running, bare-headed...' which is like saying today that he was in his boxers!

I have a 1960s book about London, showing all the City gents in their bowlers; I was up there recently and saw only one bowler, and the man stood out, he looked very formal. It seems to be only old chaps who wear hats now, (apart from baseball caps etc.), and would be a trilby with a raincoat maybe. Personally, I think it's a bit of a shame hats have fallen out of use.

I think you would get odd looks if you where wearing a suit and a bowler and where young. But if David Beckham did this it would soon be the trendy thing to do. I also think it depends on the style of clothing you wear - designer and a nice body then yeah - short and dumpy ..no!!

i think a hat does look odd if you only where a suit with no coat.
i am referring to trilbies and flat caps.
However i think that a nice woolly or cashmere hat would give it a nice edgy young style and make a nice contrast.
bye

No. I think its kinda nice to see a guy in hat. Heck its nice to see a man in a suit instead of those baggy pants and oversized T-shirts with the cap turned backwards.

Good advise. Wear the hat. Do not let the hat wear you.

It is your right to wear what kind of hat you want to wear. If you do not want to put something on your head, it is the same right of yours. nobody will mind it
