I know that I am going to have a career in psychology. I am torn about what though. Should I be a psychiatrist or psychologist? The one thing I know is that I want to work with juvenile delinquents in the criminal justice system. (I think these people are refered to as forensic psychiatrist or forensic psychologist) Please someone help me. I am just lost about everything. Thanks in advance and someone please give me solid advice.

Ok darlin' - I have my *Bachelor's* in Psychology - so take my answer from that perspective.

First: do you want to be helping with the one-on-one mental health needs of individuals or groups that you have contact with? Or do you wish for minimal time spent with patients for the purpose of being able to prescribe psycho-active medications to alleviate their symptoms? That's simplistic, I know - but it's often the case.

As you know - you have to get that pesky Medical Degree to become a Psychiatrist. ...And while MORE knowledge can always be a good thing... is it your passion?

The youth of today are crying out in a collective voice for help - and if your heart is on helping correct the paths of endangered youth - pursue being a Psychologist, and get in there, hon. If you enjoy forensic Psychology - and your passion lies there - the chemistry knowledge alone might make it beneficial to pursue the Medical Degree.

List your strengths.
List your passions.
List your hobbies.
Then look at the curriculum of each pursuit.
What matches your passion? Your strengths and abilities? Your outside interests?

When you match your natural abilities to the curriculum that interests you - you will find the niche that brings you the most life long joy - and the greatest personal achievements.

Good luck, hon. --De

Psychiatry is biochemistry essentially psychology is not since medical perscriptions are not a part of its field and must be outsourced from that point to a qualified physician of sorts essentially that of the psychiatrist.

be a psyclogist ,since you want to worrk directly with the patients in thearpy sessions,a psychiatrist only does an initial interview and perscribes any needed meds, the actual thearpy sessions are left to the psycoligists. My wife works at a mental health clinic that has contracts with jails ,prisons and half way houses and nursing homes etc, and it is always the psycologists that do the thearpy treatment.

for psychology, you are probably going to need a phD to get a good job with a psych degree.
for psychiatry, you goto medical school.
the main difference between the two is that psychiatrists are allowed to prescribe medicine while psychologists cant.
